Mike Gaines and Ken Cox introduced the concept of Public Adjusting to South Africa more than 20 years ago and dominated the Southern African market. The company was purchased by Ernst & Young, the largest international accounting firm, and operated under their brand for a number of years. Changes in accounting rules and regulations necessitated a management buy-out of this division which has evolved into the current company.

Ryan has over 20 years experience in complex insurance claim consulting and is CEO of Insurance Claims Africa. Ryan studied a BComm, majoring in Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Tax and Auditing after which he joined a Public Adjusting company and then spent 4 years at Ernst & Young Forensic Advisory Services. In 2006 he became the practice leader and principal consultant for an international Forensic Accounting practice in South Africa which specialised in Insurance claim preparation. Ryan's clients were predominately in the top 100 listed companies on JSE. His claim experience is with manufacturing, large corporations, hospitality, listed entities and multi-national companies ranging from Financial Institutions, Logistics to Mining Companies.

Mike studied Law in South Africa before joining a Loss Adjusting company in Durban. Several years in this field resulted in him establishing his own Loss Adjusting company which became one of the largest companies of its kind in South Africa. Interest in the Public Adjusting field necessitated gaining experience in the USA and the establishment of this field of business in South Africa some 30 years ago. Mike is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and is regarded as the leading authority in the field of claim preparation on behalf of the insured party.

Denver Furmage studied his BComm at University of KwaZulu Natal and then his Hons BCompt at UNISA before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 2001. He was articled with Ernst & Young and remained with the firm in its Forensic Division for about two years after qualifying. He briefly went into commerce before opening his own forensic accounting practice and then joined Commercial Claim Services on a full-time basis in 2007. He is now a director of Commercial Claims Consultants Africa, trading as Insurance Claims Africa. He is based in Durban and manages both material damage and business interruption claims.

Ken started his insurance career in 1968 with Incorporated General Insurance and was approached 3 years later by Price Forbes who, at the time, were the largest broking company in South Africa and part of the Sedgwick group. Ken gained an enormous amount of claims experience in the 20 years that he spent with Price Forbes handling claims for their large corporate clients in all classes of insurance. Serving on several claims committees, involved in technical training and the preparation of claims workshops, he was promoted regularly to become a director of the company. He then joined Mike Gaines to start the first Public Adjusting Company in Africa, and over the past 20 years has been involved in the preparation and negotiation of all types of claims in various sectors of different industries.

Marc is a chartered accountant who joined ICA in 2017 bringing additional expertise to the team. He has since worked on a wide range of complex business interruption claims valuing R5m - R1bn. His financial background has also proved valuable in formulating stock and property damage claims. Before joining ICA, locally, Marc has worked as a Financial Manager and credit insurance specialist and, while based in London, he worked in the Energy and Medical Research sectors. His previous roles have been varied and include supporting the business through commercial performance analysis and planning.

Chad is a chartered account who joined ICA in January 2018. Prior to that, Chad had three years complex claims experience as a loss adjuster with Cunningham Lindsey and Crawford & Company in South Africa. His auditing experience was with Nexia Levitt Kirson with exposure to major retailers, wholesalers, property developers and financial services clients. Chad attended California State University, Bakersfield, completing his undergrad and attained a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting Science through UNISA. His experience attained as a loss adjuster is a great asset to the Insurance Claims Africa team and our clients.

Brett obtained his B Com Accounting (Cum Laude) Honours from the University of Johannesburg in 2005. He completed his articles at Deloitte in 2008 and qualified as a CA(SA). Brett continued his studies on a part time basis and completed a law degree and is a Certified Fraud Examiner. Brett has been involved with loss quantification, insurance claim resolution and litigation support since 2009. During this time, Brett has acted as the primary consultant on assignments involving the quantification and investigation of financial losses for a variety of clients, including major international mining manufacturing companies. Brett has assisted clients in resolving insurance matters throughout Africa and the Middle East..
